Subject: Two Connections for a Diskless Workstation
Date: January 29, 1991
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
GENERAL
INFORMATION: When you boot a diskless workstation, it establishes two
connections to the file server.
1) The boot PROM has just enough information to establish
a connection and get the boot image file from the first
file server. If that file server does not have a boot
image file, it sends the message "Error receiving from
file server" and attempts to establish another
connection to a file server. If there is only one file
server out there, it will keep getting the message
"Error receiving from file server" until a response
comes from a file server that has a boot image file in
the LOGIN directory.
2) If the boot image is correctly configured for the
diskless machine and it has an AUTOEXEC.BAT file that
loads the LAN driver and Netx, then it closes the
connection made by the boot PROM and establishes a new
connection with the file server. However, the watchdog
timer does not free up the closed connection for about
15 to 20 minutes.
